Many, not all, philosophers claim to have been that student in high school who drastically underperformed and was always bored. But that response pretty much summed up my mother's philosophy on boredom. Philosophical writing is faceless, characterless, and inexpressive. What I mean is boredom as a philosophical stance, as a desirable mental state. The similarities with buddhism are uncanny. For theory, the undermining of common sense means that philosophy becomes separated from empirical enquiry, to the impoverishment of both. Boredom is what I'm writing about right now regarding Cedric Price's Generator and Gordon Pask's boredom routines. Philosophy is often boring in these ways, but there is a much more unsettling kind of boredom that philosophical prose can induce. It didn't take much digging to find philosophical references to it. If you practice Zazen, you learn a lot about boredom. The Greeks—Aristotle, Plato and Socrates—make the cut almost every time even though they worked overtime to give philosophy a popular image caked in fossilized boredom. Then the songs, the Bored game, the opinions, the quips, the debates, the favourites-lobbying and the philosophy of bored. This here is the one outlet of our voices and our thoughts on the game. Lars Svendsen turns out not to be a doctrinaire with a strong original theory about the meaning of evil, but rather a generalist who has also written books called A Philosophy of Boredom and A Philosophy of Fear.
